It’s a dog eat dog world!

It sounds so cliché, but we really do live in a “dog eat dog world.” Emily from Pittsford sent me this e-mail last week.

Weslea,

I work at a spa here in town, and I’ve been having some troubles at work. When I first started the job my co-workers loved me. I got along with everyone, including my manager. Then my manager hired his roommate, Steve. I went on a few dates with Steve before I realized that he was a HUGE jerk. I broke of our short-lived relationship, at which point Steve decided he hated my guts. He went and told all my co-workers that I was a gossip, that I didn’t like any of them. Now, work is awful. Steve lied to our manager (his roommate) and told him that I’ve been stealing merchandise. The manager sat me down last week and told me to come clean or quit. I don’t know what to do. I don’t think he’ll believe me if I tell him Steve’s lying to him. I can’t quit, I don’t have enough experience to go to another spa and get a job like the one I have. What do I do? I feel like I’m being pushed out of my job!

Thank you,

Emily from Pittsford

I was working at a grocery store for about 2 1/2-years when this one guy started working. We are both the same age, 21, and started to hit it off. We were flirting and starting to become friends, however we never dated. We did like each other. However, a few months after he started working, things were changing. I don’t remember what exactly happened, but I do remember saying that he was good looking, but had no brains. That was the worst thing I said to him. His response went along the lines of disrespecting me to the point where he was calling me names, which I won’t repeat, but I’m sure any woman can figure them out. Well, it got back to the boss and what did she do? Nothing. No suspension, nothing. I don’t even think she talked to him about it. Yet, I don’t show enough respect to a couple of the older people working there and get a 3 day suspension for it?!?! Why should I give respect to them, if they didn’t give enough respect to me? Anywho, guys can disrespect woman and not have anything happen to them; yet a woman does it and she gets suspended or fired or something along the lines of that?!?! I guess we’ll never be an “equal” world!

Work overnights. There’s nobody around (at least where I work) so there’s no potential for problems like these to begin in the first place.
